Argiroupolis’ Springs

INSPIRED BY MOMENTS OF CALM

Argiroupolis is located between the rivers “Mousselas” and “Petres”, 27 kms south west of Rethymnon and 5km from Episkopi. The village is famous for several springs and waterfalls. The ancient Romans built baths here due to the natural lush springs and you will find remains of these constructions in the village.

Below the village where the waterfalls cascade down the hillsides there are several good tavernas. One of the main dishes is roast lamb and pork and traditional dishes such as Antikristo lamb.

Panagia Antifonitria Monsatery at Myriokefala

The monastery of Panagia Antifonitria is located in the village Miriokefala, 5km away from Episkopi. This is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. It is said to have been founded in the 11th century.
In the center of the courtyard you will find the small church of the monastery, dedicated to the Panagia (Virgin Mary), celebrating on September 8. It is decorated with frescoes of the 11th and 13th century. Today it does not operate as a monastery, but its temple is the parish church of Miriokefala village.

Kournas Lake

Kournas Lake is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete and is only 13 km from our guesthouse. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers and for those who want to enjoy a walk around the lake. On the one shore of the lake there are cafes and tavernas, and also water-bikes and canoes are rented.

Archeological Museum of Rethymno

The Archeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed since 1991 in the pentangular building in front of the main gate of Fortezza.
Its exhibits reflect the cultural history of the prefecture, from the Neolithic times to the Roman times. The collections include findings from caves, settlements and cemeteries of the Minoan times as well as objects of the Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman times which were found in the excavation sets of important ancient cities.

Arts Center & Workshop of Byzantine Tradition

Historical – Folk Museum of Rethymno

The Historical – folk museum of Rethymno is located in the centre of the town just 16,6km away from Episkopi. It is situated at a Venetian building, a monument of the 17th century. The exhibition area of the Museum includes five chambers mainly with objects of traditional handicraft and folkloric art. The goal of the Historical – Folkloric Museum of Rethymno is to be developed  into a modern research and education center for the preservation of the Folk Culture of Crete.

Historical – Folk Museum of Gavalohori

The Museum is divided into seven rooms, according to the following units: “The Arched House”, “Silk”, “Pottery”, “Lace-making”, “Masonary and Stone Carving”, “Church and Woodcarving”.
The historical section of the Museum includes guns and swords from the lengthy struggles of the Cretans for their freedom, as well as a small part of the collection of paintings and historical lithographs in which some of the most significant events of the history of Greece and Crete are depicted. There are also coins (Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Turkish, coins of the Cretan State and Syracusan coins from the period 405-345 BC) and medals won in battlefields by citizens of Gavalohori.

Fortezza Castle

The Venetian Fortress of Fortezza is built on the hill of Paleokastro, west of Rethymno. The carvings found at various points on the hill testify the existence of the acropolis on the rock. The settlement was probably near the harbor. Today Fortrezza is the most important monument of Rethymnon, a trademark of the city. The restored buildings host cultural events and exhibitions, while in the bastion of Prophet Elias is the small Municipal Theater “Erofili”.

The Venetian Port of Rethymnon is one of the most picturesque parts of the old city with a trademark of the Egyptian lighthouse and the jetty that once protected the harbor and was built by the Venetians in the 13th century. In the summer, the taverns take out the tables and invite passers to sit down and enjoy the greek kitchen. From Rethymnon small boats start for day trips to the neighboring beaches.

Modern Art Museum

INSPIRED BY MOMENTS OF CALM

It is located in the heart of the old historic city, beneath the Venetian wall and the Archaeological Museum.   Since 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete is a modern museum of high standards of about 1000 sq.m. who after the expansion and full restoration work completed the old Municipal Art Gallery “L. Kanakakis “(1992) and the Contemporary Art Creation Center (1995).

Munincipal Garden
of Rethymnon

The Municipal Garden of Rethymnon is an attraction located near the city center of Rethymno, in the square of the Four Martyrs. A green lung with a playground,  a fountain and a coffee shop, and is considered particularly special because it hosts rare plant species and is also used as a  sports area as well as political and cultural events take place such as wine celebrations and more.
